Baseball drops doubleheader to #6 Kennesaw State

KENNESAW, GA -- Catawba College dropped both games of a doubleheader against sixth-ranked Kennesaw State University in baseball action at Stillwell Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. The Owls won by the scores of 12-3 and 8-2 in improving to 14-4. Catawba fell to 14-9. Kennesaw scored seven times in the first two innings of the opening game to take control. Donny Hood (Powder Springs, GA) and Bo Counts (Cumming, GA) had two-out doubles in the first to give the hosts a 3-0 edge. Catawba fought back with a pair of runs off an error in the second, but the Owls got four in the second, three on a two-out double by Counts. Kennesaw capped the first game scoring on a two-run homer by Hood in the sixth. The Owls pounded out 14 hits in the opener. Getting three from Hood and Travis Evans (Athens, GA). Israel Morrow (Claremont, NC) had two hits for the Tribe, while Chad Hill (Bennett, NC) had the only RBI. The Indians stayed close in the second game until a five-run sixth by Kennesaw broke open a 3-1 game. Evans led off the game for Kennesaw with a home run, but Catawba freshman Matt Fairweather (Lenoir, NC) settled down and allowed only three runs over his five innings. The Tribe tied the score in the third on a double by Blair Reynolds (King, NC), but the Owls added single runs in the fourth and fifth to go back on top. Evans hit his second home run, a three-run shot, in the sixth off Tribe reliever Chris Abernathy (Claremont, NC). Evans had three hits for Kennesaw, while Counts added two to back six strong innings by Owl starter Jerry Knox (Murfreesboro, TN), who allowed just three hits and one run over six innings. Justin Plummer (Winston-Salem, NC) drove home the final run for Catawba with a pinch-hit single in the seventh. #######
