Softball Falls Twice to Armstrong Atlantic
SAVANNAH, GA -- Armstrong Atlantic beat Catawba twice in softball action on Thursday at the 2008 Smash Hit Softball Tournament being hosted by Savannah Art & Design College. The Pirates won by the scores of 12-4 and 5-4 in improving to 14-9. The Catawba Indians fall to 12-8.
Catawba grabbed the early lead in the first game on a two-out, two-run single by Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC/SW Guilford HS). The Pirates answered back quickly with five runs in the second, getting a two-run single from Stephanie Mattes and a three-run single by Sam Floyd.
Natalie Vogler put AASU up 12-2 with a three-run homer in the fifth before Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC/W. Rowan HS) got Catawba back on the scoreboard with a two-run homer. Jessie Whitesides (Yadkinville, NC/Homeschooled) had two of Catawba’s five hits and scored twice.
The Pirates went up 3-0 in game two. In the third inning, Mattes singled home the first run, while Vogler and Ashley Bain also drove home runs. Marshall doubled home a run for the Lady Indians in the fourth, but Floyd hit a two-run homer for AASU in the fifth for a 5-1 edge.
Catawba would rally in the seventh. After a pair of leadoff walks, Brittany Thornburg (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) hit a two-out, two-run double to slice the deficit to 5-3. Kathryn Geouge (Canton, NC/Pisgah HS) singled home a run to make the score 5-4, but Floyd, who allowed just four hits, struck out the final batter to preserve the win for the Pirates.
