Baseball Settles For Split in Doubleheader at Brevard
BREVARD, NC -- Brevard and 24th-ranked Catawba split a baseball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Coan Field. The Catawba Indians won the opener 7-4 in 12 innings, while the Tornados won the nightcap 3-1. The Indians now stand at 15-8, while Brevard is 7-13.
Weston Church (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS) tripled home Zeb Link (Woodleaf, NC/W. Rowan HS) with the eventual winning run in 12th to lift the Indians in the opener. Bubba Morris (Spencer, NC/N. Rowan HS) and Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) followed with RBI singles for insurance. Alex Fairweather (Lenoir, NC/W. Caldwell HS) got the win, tossing four scoreless inning with six strikeouts and Matt Seabolt (Asheboro, NC/Asheboro HS) shut the door on the Tornados to notch his third save.
Fairweather worked out of trouble in the 10th as Brevard got the first two runners on with a single and an error. The junior got a double play ball then a flyout after an intentional walk to end the threat. Brevard also had two runners on in the 11th, but Fairweather struck out the final two batters.
Lyerly’s two-out, two-run single in the second had staked Catawba to an early 2-1 lead, but that was erased on a two-out, three-run homer by Brice Warner in the Tornado second. Matt Kepley (Greensboro, NC/Ragsdale HS) tied the game with a run-scoring fielder’s choice in the third and a RBI-single in the fifth.
After surrendering the home run, Tribe starter Tim Smith (Walnut Cove, NC/S. Stokes HS) did not allow hit over this final five and a third innings. He struck out 10 on four hits in seven innings before giving way to Fairweather. Catawba out-hit Brevard 16-6 with Lyerly and David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC/Ledford HS) each picking up three this. Mitch Hefner had three hits for Brevard.
Catawba fell behind 2-1 in the nightcap when Brevard pushed across a pair of unearned runs in the second. A Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC/Brown HS) leadoff triple and a Kevin McMillan (Salisbury, NC/N. Rowan HS) sacrifice fly put the Indians up 1-0 in the second, but a two-out error led to a two-run double by Adam Arrowood to put the Tornados on top.
Blake Ketner (Davidson, NC/NW Cabarrus HS) struck out the side in the fourth and fifth innings, but gave up a leadoff double to Warner and a single to Justin Frady in the sixth as Brevard extended the lead to 3-1. Catawba had only one hit after the second inning, a double by Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS) in the sixth, but he was stranded at third.
Shane Galloway tossed the complete game for Brevard. He allowed the single run on three hits. Ketner surrendered just four hits and one earned run with a career-high 11 strikeouts in six innings.
