Baseball gets swept by #6 Owls

KENNESAW, GA -- Sixth-ranked Kennesaw State completed a three-game sweep of visiting Catawba College with a 15-5 win in baseball action at Stillwell Stadium on Thursday afternoon. The Owls improve to 15-4, while Catawba falls to 14-10. Catawba nearly matched the Kennesaw hit output as the Owls had 18 hits to the Tribe’s 14, but Kennesaw connected for six home runs and used two big innings to pull away for the win. Catawba opened with three straight hits, but a caught stealing and a runner thrown out on the bases netted no runs and Kennesaw grabbed the momentum with a six-run first inning. Four of the runs scored with two outs, including two on a home run by Dustin Atkinson (Marietta, GA). Brian Hatley (Salisbury, NC) delivered a sacrifice fly for Catawba in the second and Curt Motsinger (Kernersville, NC) had a two-run homer in the third, but Kennesaw matched the runs and led 9-3 after three innings. The Owls put the game away in the fifth, scoring five times. Both Derrick Tucker (Woodstock, GA) and Donny Hood (Powder Springs, GA) hit their second home runs of the game in the inning. Catawba got a RBI triple from Chad Hill (Bennett, NC) and a run-scoring single by Matt Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) in the seventh to make the final 15-5. John Hearn (Middletown, MD), Mark Hamilton (Savannah, GA) and Zach Snyder (Lexington, NC) combined to pitch three and one-third innings of scoreless relief to end the game. Six Indians had two hits, including Blair Reynolds, who collected his team-leading 17th double to move within three of the school record of 20. Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC) also had two hits and his 12th double, while Hill collected his third triple among his two hits. Motsinger, Hatley and Smith also had two hits. Hood had four hits to lead the Owls. #######
