Tough Start Leaves Lacrosse on Short End in 13-9 Loss to NDNU
SALISBURY, NC -- Notre Dame de Namur got seven goals from Brad Matzek (Tustin, CA) in a 13-9 win over host Catawba in men’s lacrosse action on Monday night at Shuford Stadium. The Argonauts improve to 5-1, while the Catawba Indians drop to 2-3.
The Argos came out of the gates quickly getting to goals from Matzek and Jesse Painter (Pleasanton, CA) as NDNU grabbed a 6-1 lead after the opening quarter. Catawba regrouped and tallied the first six goals of the second quarter to take the lead at 7-6 at the 4:01 mark on the second of two straight goals by Nick Desper (Carrboro, NC/Chapel Hill HS).
Matzek scored the final two goals of the quarter to put NDNU back on top then scored the opening two goals of the third quarter to stretch the lead to 10-7. The Indians closed within 11-9 on a goal by Kurt Green (San Diego, CA/Mt. Carmel HS) with 7:13 remaining, but Tim Campeau (Coquitlam, BC, CANADA) scored twice in a 28 seconds span to put the Argos up 13-9 with 4:01 to play,
Campeau added two assists to his two goals, giving him four points on the night. Jon Black (Oakland, CA) also had four points on a goal and three assists. Green led Catawba with three goals, while Desper and Marty Tuohy (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) added two each.
