Softball Drops Two Tight Games With #20 Bloomsburg

SALISBURY, NC -- Bloomsburg swept both ends of a softball doubleheader from host Catawba on Tuesday afternoon at Whitley Field.  The 20th-ranked Huskies won the opener 2-1 in nine innings then completed the sweep with a 4-2 win in game two.  Bloomsburg improves to 7-1, while the Catawba Indians fall to 14-11.

Lacey Mauro (Jersey Shore, NJ) delivered a two-out single in the top of the ninth to give the Huskies the win in the opener.  The game was a pitcher’s duel between Bloomsburg’s Ashley Lynn (Riverside, PA) and Catawba’s Meghan Cobb (Richmond, VA/Lloyd Bird).  Lynn allowed just four hits and the unearned run in the opener.  She struck out five in improving to 3-0.  Cobb surrendered just five hits and one earned run with three strikeouts and was perfect until a two-out hit in the fifth.

Catawba took the lead in game one, scoring a run in the first inning without a hit.  Ryann Baker (Rockwell, NC/E. Rowan HS) walked, moved to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch.  The Lady Indians failed to add to the lead, leaving runners at second and third with no outs.

In the fourth, Catawba loaded the bases with two outs, but Baker popped up to end the frame.  After breaking up the perfect game in the fifth, the Huskies got on the board in the sixth on a two-out single by Nikki Shiko (Kulpmont, PA) that scored pinch-runner Casey Massimini (Downingtown, PA) from second.

Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC/W. Rowan HS) led off the Catawba sixth with a double, but the Lady Indians failed to get the run home.  Catawba would strand 10 runners in the opener.

Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC/SW Guilford HS) had three hits and drove in both runs for Catawba in the nightcap, but it wasn’t enough.  She cut a 2-0 deficit with a homer in the fourth and singled home a run in the sixth to pull the Lady Indians within 3-2.

Natalie Zimmerman (State College, PA) and Tara Reed (Williamsport, PA) drove home runs as Bloomsburg scored in the first two innings of the nightcap for a 2-0 lead.  After the Marshall homer, Stacy Krupiewski (Trooper, PA) plated a run with a two-out single in the sixth and Mandy Koch (Dauphin, PA) homered in the seventh to give Bloomsburg an insurance run.

Reid collected two hits and tossed the complete game for Bloomsburg to improve to 3-0.  She allowed seven hits and recorded a dozen strikeouts.  Koch, Zimmerman and Kayleen Sidisky (Bellefonte, PA) joined Reed with two hits for the Huskies.  White had two hits for Catawba.
