Softball Splits Doubleheader with Fairmont State
Cobb tosses two-hit shutout in opener
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba and visiting Fairmont State split a softball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Catawba Indians won the opener 5-0, while the Falcons gained the split with a 6-4 victory in the nightcap. The Lady Indians are now 15-12 on the year, while Fairmont State stands at 8-6.
Freshman Meghan Cobb (Richmond, VA/Lloyd Bird) tossed a two-hit shutout to lead Catawba to the win in the opener. Catawba did not get on the board until the fifth inning, but Jesse Whitesides (Yadkinville, NC/Homeschooled) scored on a double steal with Ryann Baker (Rockwell, NC/E. Rowan HS) for the lead.
Baker would score on an error with Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC/W. Rowan HS) and Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC/SW Guilford HS) following with RBI doubles giving Catawba a 4-0 lead. Cobb allowed only one Falcon runner to reach second base, which was leadoff hitter Whitnie Highland (Scott Depot, WV), who singled and went to second on a sacrifice before being picked off.
Fairmont State scored three times in the opening inning of game two. Amy Davis (Jane Lew, WV) doubled home a pair of runs and Molly McCormick (Cumberland, MD) had a two-out single to drive home the last run of the frame. The Lady Indians tied the game in the third on a three-run homer by Marshall.
The Falcons went back on top in the fifth as Davis singled home a run and took a 5-3 lead on Highland’s triple in the sixth. Sarah VanBuskirk (Lutz, FL/Wesley Chapel HS) singled home Marshall to cut the margin to 5-4 in the sixth, but Fairmont State got an unearned run in the seventh for its 6-4 edge.
Alyssa Childers (Johnstown, OH) limited Catawba to just four hits, with two coming from Marshall. Davis had three hits for the Falcons, while Highland and Kristy Rausch (Mason, OH) each had two hits.
