Baseball Rolls to 14-2 Victory vs. St. Andrews
McSweeney tosses seven strong innings after Huneycutt hit by line drive
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba got home runs from Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC/Brown HS) and Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS) in a 14-2 win over visiting St. Andrews in baseball action on Wednesday night at Newman Park. The Catawba Indians improve to 16-8, while the Knights fall to 9-17.
Travis McSweeney (Palm Harbor, FL/East Lake HS) got the win as he tossed seven innings of relief after Tribe starter Wil Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanley) was hit in the face on a liner back up the middle on the game’s first pitch. The freshman left the field under his own power and was taken for x-rays. McSweeeny allowed just five hits and two runs (one earned) in his stint on the mound.
Catawba got a pair of unearned run in the second on a single by Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) to grab the early lead and Query put the Indians up 5-0 in the third with a three-run homer. A bases-loaded single by B.J. Horne (Hamlet, NC) and an error plated the two Knight runs in the fourth.
Catawba scored twice in the fifth and four in the sixth to put the game away. Sands had a two-run homer in the sixth. The Indians collected 15 hits on the night with Bubba Morris (Spencer, NC/N. Rowan HS) leading the way with three hits. Lyerly, Sands and Query each had three RBI. Kyle Norris (Laurel Hill, NC) had a pair of hits for St. Andrews.
