Sands Goes 5-for-6 as Baseball Splits Doubleheader With IUP
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba and visiting Indiana of Pennsylvania split a doubleheader in baseball action on Thursday at Newman Park. The Hawks won the opener 6-2, while the Catawba Indians rallied for a 9-7 win in the nightcap. Catawba moves to 17-9 on the season, while IUP stands at 10-3.
Dan Snyder (Shelocta, PA) tossed a five-hit complete game in the opener for IUP. He allowed two runs (one earned) with four strikeouts. Three consecutive two-out singles in the second gave the Hawks their first run as Corey Betz (Dillsburg, PA) drove home T.J. Nichols (Sykesville, PA). Jamie Smith (Mississauga, Ontario, CANADA) homered in the third for a 2-0 lead.
Betz would add a two-run homer in the fourth before Catawba scratched for a run in the fifth on a single by Andrew O’Neal (King, NC/W. Stokes HS). A pair of unearned runs in the seventh padded the IUP advantage. Betz had three hits in the opener for the Hawks, while Nichols added two and scored twice. Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS) had two hits and scored two runs for Catawba.
The Indians would score four times in the eighth inning of the nightcap to rally from a 7-5 deficit. Catawba had just one hit in the frame, a leadoff single by Bubba Morris (Spencer, NC/N. Rowan HS). With one out, an error, a hit batter and a bases loaded walk forced home Morris. Joe Manser (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) scored a balk to tie the game and Sands’ sacrifice fly put Catawba on top. Another error led the final run.
Matt Seabolt (Asheboro, NC/Asheboro HS) pitched the ninth to earn his fourth save in relief of Brett Hatley (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS), who tossed two shutout innings to pick up the win. Weston Church (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS) recorded the final out of the first inning with the bases loaded after IUP had scored four runs then threw five additional innings without allowing an earned run (three unearned).
The first four Hawk batters of game two scored. Shayne Busti (Cruciable, PA) hit a two-run homer to cap the scoring. Catawba fought back with three runs of its own in the first inning, using a pair of errors and getting RBI singles from Sands and Kevin McMillan (Salisbury, NC/N. Rowan HS).
IUP added three more runs in the sixth as the Tribe committed three errors in the frame. Catawba cut the lead to 7-5 in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC/Ledford HS) and a single by Church. Sands had three hits for Catawba in game two with Morris adding two more. Paul Bingham (Hanover, PA) collected four hits for the Hawks and Kyle Stryker (Mississauga, Ontario, CANADA) added three.
