Baseball Grabs 10-6 Win in Opening Game of Wingate Series
Thomas and Query each collected three hits
WINGATE, NC -- Catawba pounded out 17 hits en route to a 10-6 win over host Wingate in South Atlantic Conference baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field on Friday night. The Catawba Indians improves to 18-9 overall and 7-3 in the SAC. The Bulldogs fall to 12-19 overall and 3-4.
David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC/Ledford HS) was three-for-four with a homer, three RBI and two runs scored to lead the Catawba attack. Ten different players had a hit for the Indians, while six different players scored runs and five players had at least two hits.
Heath Weatherford (Rockingham, NC) was three-for-five with a homer and three RBI for Wingate. The Bulldogs had nine hits, including three home runs.
Catawba got on the board first in the third inning on a solo home run by Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS). Wingate responded in the bottom of the inning on a two-run double from Weatherford and scored another run on an error. Catawba tied the game in the fifth on a two-run double from Thomas, but the Bulldogs went right back on top in the bottom of the inning. Spencer Robinson hit a lead-off homer and Weatherford connected with one out on a solo shot for a 5-3 lead.
The Indians came right back in sixth, tying the score on a groundout from Weston Church (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS) and a double by Chris Ahearn (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) then broke the game open with a four-run seventh. An errant throw on a bunt by Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS) led to the first run, while Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC/Brown HS) and Andrew O’Neal (King, NC/W. Stokes HS) singled home runs.
Tim Holmes (Bay Village, OH/Bay HS) got the win in relief for Catawba. He pitched an inning and a third scoreless innings while striking out two. Nathan Furr (Albemarle, NC/W. Stanly HS) got the save, allowing one run on three hits in three innings while striking out seven.
