MARS HILL, NC -- Catawba claimed a 9-8 win in overtime over host Mars Hill in Deep South Conference lacrosse action on Sunday afternoon at the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.  Kurt Green (San Diego, CA) scored the game winning goal with 2:16 left in the first overtime period.  The Catawba Indians improve to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in the DSC, while the Lions fall to 5-3 and 0-1.

The game was tight throughout with Catawba never trailing, but could only reach a two-goal advantage twice.  The Indians scored the opening two goals for a 2-0 lead after four minutes, but Mars Hill rallied on two goals by Danny Farmer (Calgary, Alberta, CANADA) to tie the game.  Catawba led 4-3 after a quarter with Kris Frier (Tully, NY) netting the lone goal of the second quarter at the 2:04 mark to send the team to the break even at 4-all.

Nick Desper (Carrboro, NC/Chapel Hill HS) started the second half as he did the first with a goal to give the Tribe a lead.  A goal by Wayne Carbiener (Orlando, FL/Olympia HS) at the 6:57 mark put the Indians up 5-3.  The teams traded goals until Farmer score the last of his four goals to knot the score at 7-all with 11:49 to play.

Kurt Green (San Diego, CA/Mt. Carmel HS) gave Catawba an 8-7 lead with 9:48 remaining, but the Lions were able to send the game to overtime on Frier’s goal with just 18 seconds in regulation.  Green would pick up the game-winner on a feed from Carbiener to give Catawba the win in the league opener for both teams.

Green, Desper and Marty Tuohy (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) each had a pair of goals for Catawba.  Green added one assist, while Carbiener had a goal and two helpers.  Ben Huber (Westminster, MD/Westminster HS) played all 61:44 in goal for Catawba and made nine saves.  Farmer’s four goals led Mars Hill with Frier adding two.  Jeff Cizdziel (Stafford, VA) scored once and assisted two more scores.  Nick Sigona (Auburn, NY) had 11 saves in goal for the Lions.
