Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Wingate, Moves Within a Half Game of SAC Lead
WINGATE, NC -- Catawba and Wingate split a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Wingate rallied for two runs in the ninth to take the opener 5-4, while Catawba grabbed a 4-1. The Catawba Indians now stand at 19-10 overall and 8-4 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs are 13-20 and 4-5.
Spencer Robinson’s (Bessemer City, NC) two-out double in the ninth-inning of the seven inning contest lifted the Bulldogs in the opener. Cale Rogers (Snow Camp, NC) led off the inning with a single and pinch-hitter Kevin Childs (Anderson, SC) reached on an error. Two batters later Alex Chapman (Morganton, NC) laid down a bunt to plate Rogers with the tying run and Catawba walked Nick Siega-Riz (Clemmons, NC) intentionally to bring up Robinson.
Catawba had rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the sixth. The Tribe loaded the bases with no outs and scored a pair of runs on an error. Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC/Ragsdale HS) doubled home the tying run with two outs. The Indians took the lead in the ninth on a two-out double by Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC/Brown HS).
Siega-Riz put Wingate on top with a triple in the third inning. Robinson would single him home for a 2-0 edge. The Bulldogs tacked on an unearned run on a sacrifice fly by Dustin Hurdle (Burlington, NC) in the fifth.
Robinson went 3-for5 with two RBI in the opener. Rogers and Siega-Riz also had two hits. Cameron Falcon (Durham, NC. got the win for the Bulldogs, going 3.1 innings in relief, allowing one run on four hits while striking out three. Baker and Andrew O’Neal (King, NC/W. Stokes HS) each had three hits for Catawba.
Catawba struck for a pair of run in the opening inning of the nightcap on two-out singles by Query and Kevin McMillan (Salisbury, NC/N. Rowan HS). That would be enough support for Blake Ketner (Davidson, NC/NW Cabarrus HS), who allowed a single run over five innings. He gave up four hits and struck out five.
Heath Weatherford (Rockingham, NC) plated Robinson with a groundout in the fourth to cut the Bulldog deficit in half, but Catawba added two more runs in the fifth on a home run by Baker and a double by Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS). Alex Fairweather (Lenoir, NC/W. Caldwell HS) got the final two outs to pick up the save.
Query had three hits to pace Catawba. Baker, Sands and Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan) each delivered a pair of hits in the nightcap.
