Query Gets Key Hit as Baseball Holds Off Pfeiffer For 10-9 Win
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba held off visiting Pfeiffer to claim a 10-9 win in baseball action on Tuesday night at Newman Park. Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC/Brown HS) put Catawba on top with a bases-clearing double in the seventh and Nathan Furr (Albemarle, NC/W. Stanly HS) got out of a first and third one-out jam in the ninth to preserve the win. The Catawba Indians improve to 20-10, while the Falcons fall to 15-17.
Catawba trailed 7-5 with two outs in the seventh, but Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC/Ragsdale HS) got a RBI single and Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS) walked to load the bases. Query stepped in and laced a 2-1 pitch off the wall in right center to give the Indians a 9-7 lead.
Pfeiffer got a run back in the eighth on a home run by Shawn Coke (W. Palm Beach, FL) and trimmed the lead to 10-9 on a double by Bryan Braxton (Hillsborough, NC) in the ninth. A single by Will Davis (New London, NC) put runners at the corners, but Furr got Hayes Hinson (Raleigh, NC) to ground into a double play to end the game.
Pfeiffer had jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning. The Falcons benefitted from a pair of Tribe errors and capped the frame on Kevin Oquendo’s (Cagual, PUERTO RICO) three-run homer. Chris Ahearn (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) tied the game at 5-all with a grand slam in the fifth. A bases-loaded walk with no outs to Josh Strickland (Liberty, NC) in the seventh put Pfeiffer back on top then Furr entered and allowed just a sacrifice fly to Braxton to limit further damage.
Query went 3-for-4 with four RBI to lead Catawba at the plate. Ahearn had two hits, including the big home run. Furr got the win in relief, allowing two runs on four hits over three innings. Braxton drove in two runs for Pfeiffer with Quendo getting three RBI on one swing.
