Lacrosse Drops Low-Scoring Contest to #8 Merrimack
SALISBURY, NC -- Merrimack, ranked eighth in the latest USILA poll, got three goals and two assists from Greg Rogowski (Cohoes, NY) and defeated host Catawba 8-4 in men’s lacrosse action on Thursday night at Shuford Stadium. The Warriors improve to 3-0, while the Catawba Indians fall to 3-4.
Jo Pisano (Dedham, MA) opened the scoring for Merrimack at the 10:33 mark of the first quarter then Rogowski scored the next two goals to push the lead to 3-0 a minute into the second quarter. The Indians got on the board in the final minute of the first half on a tally by Wayne Carbiener (Orlando, FL/Olympia HS) to make the score 4-1 at the break.
The Warriors scored the first three goals of the second half, two by Christopher Elia (East Lyme, CT), as Merrimack went up 7-1 midway through the third quarter. Catawba trimmed the deficit to 8-4 by games end, but the Warriors allowed the Indians just a single goal in the final quarter.
For Merrimack, Elia added an assist to his two goals, while Micahel Balbuena (Falmouth, MA) had a goal and two assists. Corey Spinale (Revere, MA) made a dozen saved in goal and Reid Eichelberger (Wrentham, MA) had a goal, seven ground balls and won six-of-eight face-offs.
Nick Desper (Carrboro, NC/Chapel Hill HS) had two goals for Catawba, while Kurt Green (San Diego, CA/Mt. Carmel HS) had a pair of assists. Ben Huber (Westminster, MD/Westminster HS) made 10 saves and also posted 10 ground balls. Matt Puccio (Oakton, VA/Oakton HS) had seven ground balls and caused four turnovers.
