Baseball Pounds Bears, Take Over SAC Lead
Sands collected seven RBI in rout
HICKORY, NC – Catawba shook off its tough loss in game two of Friday’s doubleheader and routed host Lenoir-Rhyne 17-4 in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Saturday afternoon at Bears Field. The win pushed the Catawba Indians into the league lead, improving to 22-11 overall and 10-5 in the SAC. The Bears fall to 17-18 and 8-4.
Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS) capped a big weekend has he drove in seven runs and scored four times in the win. With his 3-for-4 day at the plate, the junior finished the series 7-for-10 with nine RBI and eight runs scored.
Catawba wasted little time jumping on top, scoring three times in the first inning. Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC/Brown HS), who led the way with four hits on the day, singled home the first run and Brett Hatley (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS) added a two-run single. A single by Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC/Ragsdale HS) and a sacrifice fly by Sands made it 5-0 in the second and a three-run homer by Sands in the fourth pushed the lead to 8-1.
That was plenty of support for Alex Fairweather (Lenoir, NC/W. Caldwell HS), who scattered eight hits over seven innings while allowing just one earned run. He posted six strikeouts as the lefty improved to 4-1.
Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) added a two-run homer in the sixth and the Indians plated six runs in the ninth, including a bases-clearing double by Sands. Catawba pounded out 20 hits with Weston Church (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS) joining Sands with three hits.
Evan Taylor and Brian Dice each had two hits for Lenoir-Rhyne. Taylor hit a two-run homer in the seventh and also doubled and scored in the ninth.
