Softball Swept at Mars Hill
MARS HILL, NC -- Mars Hill swept a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader from visiting Catawba on Tuesday afternoon at Ponder Park. MHC won the first game 7-1 and then won game two, 6-5. The Lions improved to 29-8 overall and 3-3 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fell to 16-19 and 0-6.
Tiara Mitchell (North Charleston, SC) gave MHC a 2-0 lead in the opener, hitting a homerun in the third inning that drove in Lindsey Barrier (Salisbury, NC) who pinch ran for Kristina Osborn (Birmingham, AL). Osborn reached on a single to left field.
Catawba scored their only run in the fourth inning when Callie Gordy (Oak Ridge, NC/NW Guilford HS) singled to plate Sarah VanBuskirk (Lutz, FL/Wesley Chapel HS).
MHC broke the game open in the bottom half of the fourth frame on four hits and one Catawba error. Natalie Haithcox (Asheboro, NC) drove in two of the runs on a single to right-center field.
Tiffany Farthing (Kure Beach, NC) picked up the win (12-3) allowing just one run while striking out five batters. Paige Brantley (Raleigh, NC) three the final three innings allowing just two hits to pick up her third save on the season. Osborn went 3-3 with a run scored to lead MHC at the plate. Rebekah Huff (Mars Hill, NC) had two hits and one run scored.
Ryann Baker (Rockwell, NC/E. Rowan HS) and VanBuskirk led Catawba with two hits apiece. Meghan Cobb (Richmond, VA/Lloyd Bird HS) took the loss (11-11) for Catawba on the mound.
In game two, Haithcox hit a solo homer with one out in the six inning to give MHC a 6-5 lead they would not relinquish. Brantley picked up the win (8-2) pitching the final 1.2 innings in relief.
The Lions put four runs on the board in their second at-bat on four hits. Catawba rallied scoring four runs of its own in the fourth inning highlighted by a three-run homerun by Kathryn Geouge (Canton, NC/Pisgah HS).
Ashley Angell (Winston-Salem, NC) crossed the plate in the bottom of the fourth inning on a fielder's choice to give MHC a one-run (5-4) advantage, but Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC/W. Rowan HS) tied the score in the top of the sixth with a pinch-hit homerun to tie the contest at 5-all. Haithcox then hit the game-winning homerun in the Lions next at-bat to seal the win for MHC.
Brantley allowed just one hit in her relief effort. Haithcox went 2-4 with three RBI and a homerun. Jenny Hoyt (Rose Hill, KS) went 2-2 with an RBI. Geouge went 1-3 with an RBI and one run scored to lead Catawba at the plate. Rachel Christian (Buckingham, VA/Buckingham County HS) took the loss (3-6) for Catawba.
