Reynolds' doubles, triple play lift Baseball to sweep of Mars Hill

MARS HILL, NC -- Junior Blair Reynolds (King, NC) helped Catawba College sweep a doubleheader from host Mars Hill in South Atlantic Conference baseball action at Henderson Field on Saturday afternoon. Reynolds tied a Catawba record for doubles in a season and also turned a triple play. The Indians won by the scores of 14-7 and 3-1, in eight innings. Catawba now stands at 16-10 overall and 3-2 in the SAC, while Mars Hill falls to 13-10 and 3-2. Catawba had lost five of its last six games, all against NCAA II top 20 competition.Catawba fell behind 3-0 after three innings in the opener, but got its offense cranked up in the fourth, scoring five times. The Tribe got two bases loaded walks and another run was forced home by a hit batter to tie the score, then Israel Morrow (Claremont, NC) put the Tribe ahead with a two-run single. The Indians added three more runs in the fifth, capped by a two-run homer by Jeff Boyles (Pinnacle, NC). Mars Hill battled back in the fifth, getting a RBI single by Nick Philemon and two more runs on errors. Tribe starter Zach Snyder (Lexington, NC) got through the fifth and got excellent relief help from Thomas Giles (Lynchburg, VA) and Mark Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) to move to 4-1 on the year. Giles tossed three innings, allowing only a run off four hits, while Smith tossed the ninth, surrendering a pair of hits. After Mars Hill closed within a run in the seventh, Catawba got some much needed insurance with a six-run ninth. Matt Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) and Reynolds each drove home two runs in the inning with singles. Morrow had three hits in the game, while Smith and Boyles each had three RBI. The second game was a pitching duel between Catawba's Brian Hatley (Salisbury, NC) and the Lions' Jim Miller that was decided in eight innings. Hatley went the distance allowing just one run, while scattering seven hits. He walked one and struck out four to improve to 4-1. Miller allowed just four hits and a run over his seven innings, while Ricky Hendrix took the loss, allowing two runs in the extra frame. Mars Hill drew first blood in the opening inning on a RBI single by Bronson Whiteside. The Indians came right back in the second, getting a home run from Matt Baker (Charlotte, NC). The pitchers dominated the next four innings until Reynolds led off the sixth with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch, but Miller worked out of the jam without allowing a run. Mars Hill put the first two runners on in its sixth, but Justin Mahon lined into a triple play to Reynolds at third base. Reynolds led off the seventh with a double to tie the record with 20 two-baggers in just 26 games. It took Travis Goins 51 games and Curt Motsinger (Kernersville, NC) 52 games to set the record in 2000. Spence Southard reached as he sacrificed Reynolds to third and Motsinger delivered a sacrifice fly. Southard then stole second and scored on a single by Chad Hill (Bennett, NC). The Lions got the tying run to the plate in the eighth, but could not score. Reynolds and Baker each had two hits for the Tribe in the second game. #######
