Baseball Rolls Past Barton 11-2

Thomas collects four hits and Church wins in first start

SALISBURY, NC -- Freshman Weston Church (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS) tossed six strong innings and 28th-ranked Catawba erupted for 11 runs over its final four at bats to defeat visiting Barton 11-2 in baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Newman Park.  The Catawba Indians improve to 24-12, while the Bulldogs fall to 19-21,

Church, who was making his first start, allowed just two runs off four hits as he pitched into the seventh inning.  He walked none and struck out three.  The Bulldogs took the lead with a run in the second.  Jimmy Metzinger (Louisburg, NC) reached on a wild pitch after striking out and would score on a two-out single by Aaron Watkins (Newport News, VA).

The Indians would strike for three runs in the fifth to take the lead.  Bubba Morris (Spencer, NC/N. Rowan HS) tripled home the tying run and scored on a single by Chris Ahearn (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) to give Catawba the lead.  David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC/Ledford HS) hit a three-run homer to cap a four-run sixth that gave Catawba a 7-1 edge.

Barton got a run in the seventh and had the bases loaded with one out, but Nathan Furr (Albemarle, NC/W. Stanly HS) got a strike out and ground out to end the inning.  He tossed an inning and two-thirds of perfect relief with three strikeouts.  Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS) capped the scoring in the eighth with a three-run homer.

Thomas enjoyed a 4-for-4 afternoon with four RBI and three runs scored.  He singled twice, doubled and homered.  Ahearn had three this, while Sands and Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) each had two hits.  Catawba out-hit Barton 14-5.
