SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba scored 13 runs in the third inning and out-slugged visiting Lincoln Memorial 24-12 in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Friday night at Newman Park.  Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan) had four hits, including two homers, and broke a school record by scoring six runs, while Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC/Ragsdale HS) provided six RBI to pace 28th-ranked Catawba.  The Catawba Indians improve to 25-12 overall and 11-5 in the SAC, while the Railsplitters fall to 22-15-1 and 4-9.

Lincoln Memorial grabbed the early lead on John Couch’s (Bonnyman, KY) bases-clearing double in the second for a 3-0 edge.  Down 4-1 in the third, Catawba plated 13 runs (12 with two outs) on seven hits to take control.

Baker singled home David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC/Ledford HS) with one out then after a groundout, LMU pitchers would issue five straight walks, three with the bases loaded, to give Catawba a 5-4 edge.  Chris Ahearn (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) singled in two runs and after Thomas was hit by a pitch, Baker drove home three runs with a double.  Two-run homers by Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS) and Lyerly would cap the scoring in the inning.

The Railsplitters closed within 19-12 on a three-run homer by Casey Sedley (Miami, FL) in the eighth, but Catawba responded with five more runs in its eighth to double up LMU.  Every Catawba starter scored a run with all but Ahearn and O’Neal scoring at least twice.  Lyerly broke the previous mark of five runs in a game which had been accomplished on 11 previous occasions, most recently by Greg Payne in 1996.

The home run by Sands marked the 50th in his career as the junior drew within four of the school mark of 54 set by Jimbo Davis.  Thomas swiped his 82nd career base in the third to become the schools all-time leader in that category, surpassing the mark of 81 by Spence Southard.  Thomas already holds school marks in career hits and runs scored.

Derek Treece (Powell, TN) and Storm Kaufman (Miramar, FL) each had three hits for LMU.  Sedley had four RBI, while Treece and Couch each drove in three runs for the Splitters.
