Schiffel closes career with two school records at Swimming Nationals

ORLANDO, FL -- Senior Melissa Schiffel (Hickory, NC) closed out her outstanding career with a pair of school record swims at the NCAA II National Swimming and Diving Championship held at the YMCA Aquatic Center in Orlando, FL. In four events, Schiffel posted three top 20 finishes and had record swims in the 1000 freestyle and the 500 freestyle. Schiffel opened her meet on Wednesday in the 1000 free, where she placed 21st. Her time of 10:39.12 bested her own Catawba record by over 13 seconds. On Thursday, she swam the 400 individual medley, finishing 19th in a time of 4:39.97. That time was the fifth best by a Lady Indian. She holds the six five times in both events. Friday, Schiffel set her second record of the meet, swimming a time of 5:10.53 in the 500 free. She placed 17th in the event. The senior closed out her career on Saturday in the 1650 free. She placed 13th in the event, swimming a time of 17:38.37, second best all-time at Catawba. She holds the top seven times in both events. Schiffel graduates as the holder of eight individual school records. She was also a member of two school record relay swims. In addition to her records set at the nationals, Schiffel also holds school marks in the 1650 free, the 200 and 400 backstroke, the 200 breaststroke and the 200 and 400 individual medleys. Her record relay swims came in the 800 free and 400 medley. #######
