Lacrosse Holds Off Queens For 12-10 Win
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba got four goals from Kurt Green (San Diego, CA/Mt. Carmel HS) and defeated visiting Queens 12-10 in men’s lacrosse action on Saturday night at Shuford Stadium. The win evens the Catawba Indians record at 4-4, while the Royals fall to 1-9.
The Indians stormed out of the gates, scoring the opening four goals. Catawba built its lead in the opening 10 minutes before Queen got on the board with 1:09 left in the quarter on a goal by Andy Capallo (Bel Air, MD). The Royals would rally in the second quarter as Capallo scored at the 5:11 mark and the teams went to the break with the score tied 4-all.
Stephan Leblanc (Stoney Creek, Ontario, CANADA) notched consecutive goals within a minute to put Queens on top for the first time at 6-5 at the five minute mark of the third quarter. Catawba rebounded with three straight tallies, the final two by Green, to take an 8-6 edge just 37 seconds into the final quarter. Queens would cut the margin to a single goal on three occasions, but Nick Desper (Carrboro, NC/Chapel Hill, NC) iced the game for the Indians as he beat a double team and scored into an empty net with 25 seconds remaining.
Desper and Sean Duggan (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh HS) each had two goals for Catawba, while Wayne Carbiener (Orlando, FL/Olympia HS) added a goal and three assists. Eric Finland (McLean, VA/McLean HS) won 13 of 21 face-offs and picked up eight ground balls, while Ben Huber (Westminster, MD/Westminster HS) made 15 saves.
Leblanc posted three goals and a pair of assists for Queens, while Capallo and Corey Thomas (Columbia, MD) also tallied three goals. Marc Lang (Cincinnati, OH) won nine face-offs and Mael Walkowiak (Salem, MA) added 11 saves in goal.
