Ketner and Lyerly Take SAC Baseball Player of the Week Honors
ROCK HILL, SC -- Catawba College swept the South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week awards as third baseman Craige Lyerly was named the Position Player of the Week and Blake Ketner was selected as the Pitcher of the Week. It was announced by the league on Monday.
Lyerly enjoyed a record-setting week as #26 Catawba won five games, including a split with No. 1 Mt. Olive. He provided the punch in the win over nation’s top team with six RBI, including a two-run single in the first and a three-run homer in the fourth for a 7-3 edge. In Friday’s win over LMU, the sophomore set a school record by scoring six runs in the win, and on Saturday he tied a mark with two triples in a game and his trio of three-baggers on the week gives him a record seven on the season.
Lyerly hit .542 with three homers over six games, including four multi-hit efforts and also provided 13 RBI and 12 runs scored. For the season, Lyerly raised his average to .396 and stands second on the team with 44 RBI and 48 runs scored.
Ketner tossed a complete game shutout in the SAC victory over LMU on Saturday and also tossed four-innings of one-hit ball vs. No. 1 Mount Olive on Tuesday in a no-decision. Combined, Ketner threw 11 innings, allowing just a single run on four hits to post a 0.82 ERA for the week’s work. He allowed a mere eight base-runners in 11 innings as he walked two and hit two in addition to surrendering just the four hits. Ketner improved to 5-2 on the season and lowered his ERA to 2.72 as he tossed his second shutout of the season.
The SAC Player of the Week is determined by a vote of the sports information directors in the league.
