Lacrosse Loses at Belmont Abbey 9-6
BELMONT, NC -- Belmont Abbey scored the final three goals to take a 9-65 win over visiting Catawba in men’s lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field. The win ups the Crusaders’ record to 4-4, while the Catawba Indians fall to 4-5.
The Indians rallied from a 5-4 halftime deficit as Max Vinograd (Bethesda, MD/Whitman HS) tallied the lone goal of the third quarter. Marty Tuohy (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) knotted the game at six-all with 9:18 to play, but Aaron Floyd snapped the tie with nine minutes to play and Belmont Abbey went on to add two more goals for the final margin.
Michael Brown scored two of his three goals in the opening quarter as the Crusaders grabbed a 3-1 edge at the 2:25 mark. Catawba got goals from Tuohy and Kurt Green (San Diego, CA/Mt. Carmel HS) in the final 1:08 of the quarter to pull the Indians even. Nick Desper (Carrboro, NC/Chapel Hill HS) gave Catawba a 4-3 lead early in the second quarter before a pair of goals by Jedd Gardner in the final 2:31 of the half gave Belmont Abbey its 5-4 edge at the break.
Tuohy had two goals and an assist to lead the Catawba offense, while Desper had a goal and an assist. Eric Finland (McLean, VA/McLean HS) won 13 of 16 face-offs and had 11 ground balls. Tres Pethel (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) played all but nine seconds in goal for Catawba and had five saves.
Brown and Gardner each scored three goals for Belmont Abbey with Brown adding three assists. Mark Kelske made nine saves. Catawba held a 36-24 edge in shots and won 14-of-19 face-offs.
