Lacrosse Sets Up Championship Game at Wingate With 10-4 Win Over Saint Leo
CHARLOTTE, NC -- Catawba got four goals from sophomore Sean Duggan (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh HS) and defeated Saint Leo 10-4 in Deep South Conference men’s lacrosse action on Sunday night at the Queens Sports Complex. The Catawba Indians improve to 6-5 overall and 3-0 in the DSC, setting up a conference championship game at Wingate on Saturday afternoon against the ninth-ranked Bulldogs, who are also 3-0 in the league. The Lions fall to 6-6 and 0-2.
Catawba got two early goals from Duggan and Kurt Green (San Diego, CA/Mt. Carmel HS) in the opening three minutes, but goals 37 seconds apart from Nick Bova (Eureka, MO) and Benjamin Brigham (Scituate, MA) tied the game for Saint Leo at the 9:07 mark. Duggan scored twice to start a 4-0 spurt that gave the Indians a 6-2 lead at the half.
Brigham pulled the Lions to within 6-3 early in the third quarter, but Catawba got a pair of man-up goals to lead 8-3 at the then end of the period. Saint Leo held a 30-24 edge in shots, but were 0-6 on man-up opportunities while the Indians converted two of eight chances.
Nick Desper (Carrboro, NC/Chapel Hill HS) followed Duggan with three goals, while Green had two goals and two assists. Wayne Carbiener (Orlando, FL/Olympia HS) picked up three assists before leaving at the end of third quarter with a knee injury. Freshman Colin McClimans (Washington, DC/Maret School) had six saves for the Indians. DJ Garry (Greenwood, IN) made eight saves for Saint Leo, who were led by Brigham’s two goals.
