Softball Rallies For Two Wins To Sweep Newberry
NEWBERRY, SC -- After being idle because of weather for over a week, Catawba returned to action and swept a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader from host Newberry on Monday afternoon at the Newberry Softball Complex. Catawba took the opener 2-1 in eight innings then capped the sweep with a 7-2 win in game two. The Catawba Indians improve to 21-20 overall and 3-7 in the SAC, while Newberry falls to 19-19 and 3-6.
The Lady Indians rallied for both wins. In the opener, Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC/W. Rowan HS) drove home the tying run in the sixth and Sarah VanBuskirk (Lutz, FL/Wesley Chapel HS) brought home the game-winner in the eighth. A five-run sixth erased a 2-1 deficit in the nightcap with White coming up big again with a two-run single for a 4-2 lead.
Richelle Mirabel had put Newberry on top in game one with a single in the second inning. Rachel Christian (Buckingham, VA/Buckingham Co. HS) would not allow another run as she tossed the complete game and scattered four hits with no walks and three strikeouts.
Katelin Edwards matched Christian taking a no-hitter into the sixth. Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC/SW Guilford HS) reached on and error to give Catawba life in the sixth and White delivered the Lady Indians’ first hit with a double that plated pinch-runner Carly Sabat (Warren, OH/Howland HS).
With Ryan Baker (Rockwell, NC/E. Rowan HS) at second to start the eighth, Marshall singled and VanBuskirk grounded out to second to plate Baker with the go-ahead run. Newberry got runners second and third in its eighth, but Christian struck out the final two batter to get the win.
Mirabal would put Newberry on top in game two as she singled home a run after a walk and a hit batter. Kat Hammond forced home a second run on a fielder’s choice. Catawba starter Meghan Cobb (Richmond, VA/Lloyd Bird HS) settled down after the first, allowing just two hits and one walk the rest of the way.
Cassie Markham (New Port Richey, FL/Mitchell HS) put Catawba on the board, singling home a run with two outs in the third, and the Lady Indians erupted for five in the sixth. After Markham struck out to open the inning the next eight Catawba batters reached base.
Marshall would double home the tying run and White delivered her two run single for the lead. Sam Vidal (Huntersville, NC/Hopewell HS) and Callie Gordy (Oak Ridge, NC/NW Guilford) also singled home runs in the inning. That was plenty of support for Cobb, who did not allow more than one base runner in an inning after the first and retired the final six batters.
VanBuskirk and Jessie Whitesides (Yadkinville, NC/Homeschooled) each had two hits for Catawba in the nightcap. Ashley Marine, who had two of the four Newberry hits in the opener, added a hit in game two.
