Late Homers Lift Baseball Over Barton
WILSON, NC -- Junior Chris Ahearn’s (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) solo home run in the ninth capped a rally as 26th-ranked Catawba defeated host Barton 9-8 in baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Nixon Field. The Catawba Indians improve to 29-14, while the Bulldogs fall to 26-23.
The Indians trailed 8-5 after seven innings, but two-out singles in the eighth by Zeb Link (Woodleaf, NC/W. Rowan HS) and David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC/Ledford HS) set the table for Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC/Ragsdale HS), who swatted a game-tying homer. Ahearn would also do his damage with two outs.
Brett Hatley (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS) worked the final four innings and shutout Barton on three hits while posting three strikeouts. He improved to 3-1 on the year. Baker had three hits and three RBI, while Link also had three hits and connected on his first career homer.
Barton got on the board in the first inning as Jimmy Metzinger doubled home a pair of runs and San Pepper plated another on a bunt. Link led off the third with his homer and Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC/Brown HS) singled home two runs to tie the game.
The Bulldogs answered right back as Pepper hit a three-run homer for a 6-3 edge after three innings. Thomas singled home a run in the fourth and Hatley had a RBI single in the fifth to trim Catawba’s deficit to a run, but Barton regained its three-run edge in its fifth has Ryan McCleney and Travis Holloman drove in runs with singles.
