Blue Wins Spring Football Game 15-9 in Double Overtime
SALISBURY, NC -- Willis Boykins (Camden, SC/Camden HS) scored from a yard-out in the second overtime and Mike Benton (Greensboro, NC/Dudley HS) broke up a fourth down pass on the goal line as the Blue topped the White 15-9 in the annual Spring Football Game. The Blue had rallied from a 3-0 deficit at the half and were also down 9-3 after the first possession of overtime.
The White produced the lone points of the first half on a 36-yard field goal by Cory Darnell (Rural Hall, NC/N. Forsyth HS) with just 12 seconds left in the opening half. The Blue got the tying points with 9:11 to play as DJ Gill (Orlando, FL/Cyprus Creek) connected on a 45-yard field goal.
The White had the first possession in overtime and scored on an 11-yard pass from Howard Williamson (Greensboro, NC/Dudley HS) to Brandon Bunn (Virginia Beach, VA/Fork Union). On the Blue possession, Patrick Dennis (Durham, NC/Cedar Ridge HS) was sacked on fourth down, but Marqus Davis (Charlotte, NC/N. Mecklenburg HS) was called for a face mask to give the Blue another set of downs at the two-yard line. Two plays later Dennis scored on a keeper to tie the game, but a two-point pass was incomplete to farce a second overtime. After a penalty backed the Blue back to the 32-yard line, Dennis completed a pass to Boykins for 31 yards to the one and Boykins scored a play later for the winning points.
Dennis threw for 117 yards, completing 10-of-22 passes. Boykins caught three of the passes for 53 yards, while Antwan Strong (Charlotte, NC/W. Charlotte HS) and Trevon McEntyre (Rutherfordton, NC/E. Rutherford HS) also had three catches. Boykins led the ground attack with 15 yards. Williamson completed 10-of-26 passes for 79 yards for the White. Bunn caught five passes for 58 yards and also completed one pass for 25 yards. Erik Smith (Evans, GA/Greenbrier HS) led the running attack with 15 yards.
Defensively, Julian Hartsell (Columbia, SC/Ridgeview HS) had one and half sacks and forced a fumble for the Blue. Lamar Keaton (Charlotte, NC/Butler HS) caused a fumble and was also in on a sack, while Aaron Cauble (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) had an interception. Davis had two sacks for the White, while Wilbur Pender (Franklinton, NC/Franklinton HS) and Brandon Sutton (Snow Hill, NC/Greene Central HS) also had sacks. Cortez Best (Huntersville, NC/N. Mecklenburg HS) and Jaspen Gray (Advance, NC/Davie Co. HS) had interceptions.
