Baker Leads Softball In Split of Doubleheader at LMU
HARROGATE, TN -- Catawba and host Lincoln Memorial split a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Neely Field. LMU took the opener 5-2, while Catawba claimed a 16-11 win in the nightcap. The Catawba Indians move to 22-21 overall and 4-8 in the SAC, while the Lady Railsplitters are 19-14 and 7-7.
Sara Henn provided the big blow in the opener with a three-run homer in the first inning to stake LMU to an early lead. The Lady Indians scored twice in the third as Cassie Markham (New Port Richey, FL/Mitchell HS) came home on a wild pitch and Kathryn Geouge (Canton, NC/Pisgah HS) on a bad throw.
Alisa Burk would double home a run for Lincoln Memorial in the fifth and Sammy Jo Garrett had a RBI single in the sixth for the final margin. Jessica Looker limited Catawba just six hits in the opener and sat down eight straight after a pair of singles with one out in the fourth until Jessie Whitesides (Yadkinville, NC/Homeschooled) led off the seventh with a hit.
Catawba exploded for 16 runs on 13 hits to take game two. The Lady Indians scored five in the first and seven in the third to grab a 14-1 edge. Ryan Baker (Rockwell, NC/E. Rowan HS) had a three-run homer in the first and added a two-run shot to cap the scoring in the third. Markham tripled home two runs earlier in the third.
Rachel Christian (Buckingham, VA/Buckingham Co. HS) picked up the win in relief of Meghan Cobb (Richmond, VA/Lloyd Bird HS), who ran into trouble in the fourth as LMU pulled within 14-9. Baker helped get one of the runs back in the fifth doubling home a run, capping a three-hit, six-RBI performance.
