Lacrosse Drops DSC Title Game 10-7 to #9 Wingate
WINGATE, NC -- The ninth-ranked Wingate University lacrosse team bolted to a 9-2 lead, then held on defeat the Catawba College Indians 10-7 Saturday afternoon in Deep South Conference lacrosse action at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field. Wingate improves to 11-2 overall and 4-0 in the DSC, claiming the 2008 regular season title. Catawba falls to 6-6 overall and 3-1 in the DSC.
Wingate’s Greg Williams (Woodbridge, VA) led the way with two goals and an assist. Mark Hodsdon (Hilton Head, SC) and Bob Chinn (Mooresville, N.. added two goals each for the Bulldogs. Kurt Green (San Diego, CA/Mt. Carmel HS) led the Catawba offense with three goals. Freshman Marty Tuohy (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) added two goals for the visiting Indians.
Hodsdon netted his first goal of the game at the 8:01 mark of the first period to give Wingate a 2-1 lead. The Bulldogs would score the next four goals of the game, capped by a goal from Ryan Otterblad (Dumfries, VA) to give the hosts a 6-1 lead with 12:16 remaining in the first half.
Green responded with a goal 67 seconds later to cut the lead to four. Chinn had the answer, registering his second goal of the afternoon at the 10:44 mark of the second quarter, putting the Bulldogs up 7-2. Dan Cook (Williamsburg, VA) and Kyle Costello (Wilmington, NC) each added goals in the next five minutes to make it 9-2. Tuohy scored with 2:18 remaining in the half, cutting the Catawba deficit to 9-3 heading into intermission.
Nick Desper (Carrboro, NC/Chapel Hill HS) scored at the 4:49 plateau of the third period to cut the lead to five at 9-4. Williams tallied an extra-man goal on an assist from Costello to boost Wingate’s lead to 10-4 with 2:11 remaining in the third frame. The Bulldogs would not score again as they withstood a furious Catawba rally.
Tuohy scored at the 7:46 mark of the fourth, followed by a goal from Green with 5:32 remaining to trim the Catawba deficit to 10-6. J.P. Lupetin (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh HS) scored with 2:55 to play to account for the final 10-7 margin.
Catawba held a 35-32 advantage in shots, while Wingate held a 21-15 edge in shots on goal and registered a 53-31 advantage in groundballs. Wingate won 17-of-20 face-offs, with Chinn winning 15-of-18 encounters. Chinn added 13 ground balls to his statistics ledger Saturday.
Wingate goalie David Suthers (Manassas, VA) had eight saves for the Bulldogs. Catawba’s Ben Huber (Westminster, MD/Westminster HS) had 11 saves for the Indians. Both netminders played 60 minutes Saturday.
Both teams will play in the Deep South Conference tournament on Friday at Mars Hill. Wingate will be the number one seed; the Bulldogs will play the fourth-seed Lions of Saint Leo University. Catawba will be the number two seed in the tournament. The Indians will face the third-seed Lions of host Mars Hill College. The semi-finals are slated for Friday, with the championship contest scheduled for Sunday.
