#23 Baseball Crushes St. Andrews 20-1
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba used a nine-run fourth to blow open a close game and went on to take a 20-1 win over host St. Andrews in baseball action on Monday afternoon at Clark Field. The 23rd-ranked Catawba Indians improve to 33-14, while the Knights fall to 13-33.
Matt Seabolt (Asheboro, NC/Asheboro HS) allowed three hits over four innings, while Travis McSweeney (Palm Harbor, FL/East Lake HS) and Joe Kelly (Tampa, FL/Catholic HS) combined five shutout innings of relief. McSweeney did not allow a hit over two frames with Kelly surrendering a pair of hits with four strikeouts in closing out the contest to earn the save. Chris Ahearn (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) wielded the hot bat with four hits, while Matt Kepley (Greensboro, NC/Ragsdale HS) added three hits.
St. Andrews took the lead after an inning following two-out doubles by Michael Eastwood and Kyle Norris. Catawba struck back with two outs in the third as Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS) doubled in Kepley, who had drawn a leadoff walk, and scored on Ryan Query’s (Kannapolis, NC/Brown HS) ensuing single.
The first 10 Catawba batters in the fourth inning reached safely as the Indians blew the game open with the nine-run frame. Bubba Morris (Spencer, NC/N. Rowan HS) started the scoring with a two-run double and capped the inning with a RBI groundout. A grand slam by Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) in the fifth pushed the lead to 15-1.
Lyerly led five players with multi-RBI efforts as he drove in five runs. Morris had all three of his RBI in the fourth inning, while Query, Ahearn and Kepley each had a pair of RBI. Lyerly, Sands and Query all had two hits. Eastwood had three of the five St. Andrews hits.
