Thomas Claims SAC Baseball Player of the Week Honors
ROCK HILL, SC -- Catawba College’s David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC/Ledford HS) and Newberry College’s Brandon Petty have been named SAC Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week. It was announced by the league on Monday.
Last week, Thomas hit .556 for the week and scored 10 runs to help No. 26 Catawba capture four wins and a sweep of Mars Hill to secure the South Atlantic Conference Championship. The senior outfielder had three hits in each of the three games against Mars Hill and scored eight runs, including four in Saturday’s opener that clinched the league title. He also had five stolen bases on the week and is hitting .443 for the season with 14 homeruns and 41 RBI.
Petty, senior from Melbourne, Florida, pitched a complete-game three-hit shutout in Newberry’s Friday night win over Lincoln Memorial. Petty tied a career-high with 11 strikeouts, while walking only four LMU batters. The win was his second complete-game shutout of the season, and his fourth complete game in 12 starts. Only three batters reached scoring position while Petty was on the mound, with none reaching third base
The SAC Player of the Week is determined by a vote of the sports information directors in the league.
