Softball Falls Into Losers Bracket After 5-0 Loss to Wingate
NEWBERRY, SC -- Third-seeded Wingate shut out sixth-seeded Catawba 5-0 in the first round of the 2008 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Softball Tournament at the Newberry College Softball Field on Thursday afternoon. The Bulldogs improve to 30-15, while the Catawba Indians fall to 24-24. The Lady Indians will now face Newberry in an elimination game on Friday morning at Newberry High School.
Wingate was led by Emily Chavis' 2-for-2 day at the plate, as she collected three RBI. Courtney Wagner drove in the Bulldogs' other two runs, while Brittany Blankenship (19-9) held the Catawba Indians to four hits and struck out seven batters on the day.
Chavis put the Bulldogs on the board in the bottom of the second with a deep homerun to right-center field. The blast was her fourth of the season and put Wingate up 1-0. The Bulldogs put the game away in the bottom of the fifth, as both Wagner and Chavis collected two-run doubles.
After a leadoff single by Sam Vidal (Huntersville, NC/Hopewell HS), Catawba could not get her home from second with one out. The Lady Indians loaded the bases in the fourth with a pair of two walks after a one-out single by Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC/W. Rowan HS), but Vidal popped up to end the threat.
Sarah VanBuskirk (Lutz, FL/Wesley Chapel HS), who doubled in the seventh, and Kathryn Geouge (Canton, NC/Pisgah HS) had the other two hits for Catawba. Meghan Cobb (Richmond, VA/Lloyd Bird HS) was tagged with the loss, allowing five earned runs on nine hits in six innings of work.
