Softball suffers a pair of tough losses

AIKEN, SC -- Catawba College dropped a pair of heart-breakers to host USC-Aiken in softball action at Pacer Park on Tuesday night. The Lady Indians fell 8-5 and 9-8 in eight innings. Aiken won both games in their final at bat after entering the inning behind. Catawba, which lost its 13th straight, fell to 10-18-1, while USC-Aiken improved to 16-10. Catawba trailed 1-0 in the opener until the sixth inning. After being shutout for six straight games, the offense finally broke loose as the ladies scored four times to grab the lead. Val McDowell (Crofton, MD) doubled to open the inning and Shannon Handy (Advance, NC) tripled her home. Jackie Carson (Summerland Key, FL) followed with a run-scoring single, while Megan Rosser (Glen Birnie, MD) and Jessica Rivera (Key West, FL) had RBI doubles. It was the first time the ladies had scored since a 8-7, nine inning loss to USC- Aiken on March 9. Aiken answered in their sixth to draw within a run on Jessie Coffey's home run. Carson put Catawb ahead 5-3 with a RBI single in the seventh, but Aiken scored five in the seventh to grab the win. After an error to open the inning, the Lady Pacers followed with three straight hits to tie the game. Heather Headings then homered to give Aiken the 8-5 win. Handy had three hits for Catawba, while Carson, Rivera and Liz Corbet (Severn, MD) each had two. Catawba jumped on top 4-0 after two innings of the second game. Corbett, McDowell and Carson had RBI singles, while Handy had a sacrifice fly. Aiken scored twice in the third and four in the fourth to grab a 6-4 edge and led 7-4 before the Lady Indians rallied with three runs in the sixth. McDowell, Handy and Carson each had RBI singles in the inning. The game went into extra innings tied at 7-7 and Catawba used a two-out error and a RBI single by Rivera to take the lead. The Lady Indians held the advantage until the two were out, when Aiken tied the game on an error. Coffey followed with a RBI single. McDowell and Amanda Myers (Lynchburg, VA) each collected three hits in the loss, while Handy and Carson added a pair of hits. #######
