06_softball_0124

NEWBERRY, SC – Catawba bounced host Newberry the then rallied to eliminate Lincoln Memorial, staying alive with a pair of wins on Friday at 2008 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Softball Tournament.  The sixth-seeded Catawba Indians improve to 26-24 and will face elimination yet again when they square off with Mars Hill on Saturday.  The Lions sent #2-seed Lenoir-Rhyne packing with a 5-2 win.

In the morning at Newberry High School against Newberry, Catawba got three hits from Cassie Markham (New Port Richey, FL/Mitchell HS) and used a five-run second to take control.   Markham singled home the first run and the Lady Indians used three errors to take the lead.  Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC/W. Rowan HS) also had a RBI in the frame.

Newberry had led 2-0 after a half inning thanks to a two-run double by Chelsea Hilbourn.  Catawba took the lead in the second and added two more in the fourth on a two-run double by Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC/SW Guilford HS) for a 7-2 edge.

Newberry scored a pair of unearned runs in the sixth and closed within 7-5 after Kat Hammond leadoff homer in the seventh.  Meghan Cobb (Richmond, VA/Lloyd Bird HS) was able to get the final outs on a double play grounder to second.  The freshman went the distance, scattering eight hits and allowing three earned runs with five strikeouts.

Callie Gordy (Oak Ridge, NC/NE Guilford HS) had a pair of hits for Catawba, while Markham and Kathryn Geouge (Canton, NC/Pisgah HS) each scored twice.  Aissa Gatewood had a pair of hits for Newberry.

Against Lincoln Memorial on Friday afternoon, Catawba used a seventh inning comeback to eliminate fourth-seeded Lincoln Memorial.  The Lady Indians were shutout for the first six innings of the game in large part to stellar catches at the fence by the LMU outfield.  Catawba stranded 10 runners in the game, including three when Alicia MacIntyre made an astounding catch while crashing through the left field fence, robbing Marshall of a grand slam in the fifth.

LMU opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, scoring two runs with two outs.  Conference Player of the Year Sara Henn drew a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Alisa Burk drew a walk and both runners were driven in on a single by catcher Devin Sponseller.

Catawba finally got on the board in the seventh.  Markham reached with a one-out single and reached third on a double by Geouge.  White grounded out to plate Markham.  Marshall drew a walk and Ryann Baker's (Rockwell, NC/E. Rowan HS) single to left center plated Geouge to tie the game at 2-all.  Sarah Van Buskirk (Lutz, FL/Wesley Chapel HS) singled to right field to plate Marshall and give Catawba the 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, LMU led off with a single from Ashley Knight, who made it to third with two outs.  Jackie Adams was called out on a close call at first base to end the game.

Cobb limited the Lady Railsplitters to just three hits and allowed just one earned run in tossing the complete game.  Markham, Gordy, Baker and VanBuskirk all had two hits for Catawba.
