Errors Costly as Softball Eliminated by Mars Hill at SAC Tournament
NEWBERRY, SC -- Catawba gave up six unearned runs and were eliminated by Mars Hill 6-3 at the 2008 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Softball Tournament on Saturday morning at the NC Softball Complex. The Lady Lions will advance to face either Wingate or Carson-Newman later on Saturday in another elimination game. The Catawba Indians, seeded-sixth, end their season at 26-25.
Sam Vidal (Huntersville, NC/Hopewell HS) gave Catawba an early lead as she singled to plate Ryann Baker (Rockwell, NC/E. Rowan HS) in the second. The wheels would come off the Catawba in the top of the third as a two-out throwing error led to five Mars Hill runs.
One Lion scored on the error to tie the game and after a pair of walks, Ashley Seawell drove home a pair of runs with a double. A single by Ashley Harber pushed the lead to 5-1.
Down 6-1, Catawba rallied for a pair of runs in the fourth. Vidal singled and Jessie Whitesides (Yadkinville, NC/Homeschooled) doubled with one and both scored on a throwing error.
In the sixth, Catawba threatened after Kristyn Funderburke (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) and Whitesides singled. Both moved up a base on a wild pitch, but Cassie Markham (New Port Richey, FL/Mitchell HS) lined out down the left field line to end the inning.
Vidal and Whitesides each had two hits for Catawba. Meghan Cobb (Richmond, VA/Lloyd Bird HS) took the loss despite allowing just four hits. All six runs were unearned. She did walk six with three strikeouts.
Tara West got the win for Mars Hill, tossing four innings and allowed six hits and one earned run. Paige Brantley tossed three shutout innings in relief for the save. She allowed three hits with five strikeouts.
