Offense quelled in Baseball loss at Pfeiffer

MISENHEIMER, NC -- Catawba College managed only two hits and fell to host Pfeiffer 3-1 in baseball action at Ferebee Field on Wednesday afternoon. The Indians fall to 16-11 with the loss, while Pfeiffer improves to 11-13. Catawba got a good pitching performance by starter Matt Fairweather (Lenoir,NC), who allowed just one run over five innings, but the offense could not help him out. Pfeiffer took the lead in the fourth as Brad Cassady led off with a double and scored on a single by Mark Schleicher. The Falcons threatened again in the fifth, but Fairweather worked out of a two-out, bases-loaded jam. The Indians tied the game in the sixth as Jeff Boyles (Pinnacle, NC) led off with a single, got to third on a sacrifice and a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC). Pfeiffer would score its winning runs in the seventh on a two-out, two-run single by Schleicher. Matt Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) had the other Tribe hit, a single in the seventh. Chris Noll earned the win in relief for Pfeiffer. He allowed one unearned run off two hits over three innings of work. Jim Brown earned the save, pitching a scoreless eighth and ninth. He walked three, but did not allow a hit. Catawba will return home this weekend for a three-game league series with Wingate. The Indians last played at home on March 7. #######
