Baker Heads List of Five Catawba Players on SAC Baseball All-Tournament Team
ROCK HILL, SC -- Catawba placed five players on the South Atlantic Conference Baseball All-Tournament Team. Earning honors as voted on by the coaches were Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC/Ragsdale HS), Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC/Brown HS), Matt Kepley (Greensboro, NC/Ragsdale HS), Brett Hatley (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS) and Tim Smith (Walnut Cove, NC/S. Stokes HS).
Baker, a senior second baseman, continued his stellar season as he hit .500 (12-of-24) over the Tribe’s five games and rapped out seven doubles. He became the 10th person in school history to get three two-baggers in one game in the win over Lenoir-Rhyne. He also had seven RBI and scored seven runs.
Query, a junior catcher, also hit .500 with four RBI. Kepley, a senior outfielder, batted .409 with four RBI. He had four doubles and a home run.
Hatley, a sophomore, had an outstanding tournament at the plate and on the mound. He batted .353 while tossing seven and a third innings without allowing a run. He surrendered just two hits, struck out four and walked none. Hatley picked up a save in the win over Lenoir-Rhyne.
Smith, a senior, returned to the mound after being out for three weeks and earned a win and a save. He totaled eight innings and posted a 2.25 ERA. Smith allowed nine hits and struck out four.
Tusculum placed six on the team, led by tournament MVP Maikol Gonzalez. He was joined by Rob Currie, Eric Donohue, Boo Morrow, Paul Finger and Sean Cotten. Brett Hontz, from Carson-Newman, also made the team as did Wingate’s Nick Siega-Riz and Scott Kelly. Newberry’s Casio Grider rounded out the squad.
Others from Catawba who enjoyed outstanding weekends, included Bubba Morris (Salisbury, NC/N. Rowan HS), David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC/Ledford HS) and Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS). Morris hit .368, collected three doubles, drove in six runs and scored seven times. Thomas and Sands each hit .333. Sands led the tournament with three home runs and eight RBI, while Thomas had a pair of homers and scored a tourney high eight runs.
