Softball drops two in league-opening seriesSALISBURY, NC -- Tusculum College swept a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader from host Catawba on Friday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Pioneers won by the scores of 3-2 and 8-0 to improve to 8-18 overall and 2-0 in the SAC. Catawba fell to 10-20-1 and 0-2 and saw its losing streak reach 15 games. Catawba took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning of the opener, scoring on an error and a RBII single by Amanda Myers (Lynchburg, VA). Tusculum got a run on a two-out double by Laura Williams (LaVerge, TN) in the fifth, then scored a pair of runs off a Lady Indian error in the sixth to take the lead. With runners at second and third with two outs in the sixth, Jessica Taylor (Greenville, TN) hit a shallow fly to left, that Jessica Rivera (Key West, FL) raced in on, but dropped just beyond the infield allowing both runs to score. The Lady Indians got the tying run on first in the seventh, but Kelly Nugent (Pembroke Pines, FL) ended the game with a diving catch in center. The Pioneers scored three times in the first and third innings of the second game to seize control. Mitzi Foust (Andersonville, TN) had a two-run single in the first, while Judith St. Clair (Manchester, TN) had a two-run single in the third. Mandy Kurtz (Milton, PA) held Catawba to just two hits to even her mark at 1-1. St. Clair collected three hits in the nightcap, while Williams had five hits in the two games. #######
