Thomas Named Baseball Consensus All-American

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College’s David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC/Ledford HS) has been named a consensus All-American, earning first team honors from three different organizations.  Thomas was selected by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and the Sports Information Directors Dakronics team.  He was joined on the All-America teams by Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS), who was named second team by the ABCA and third team by the NCBWA and Dakronics.

In addition to the All-America honors, Thomas was named the NCBWA South Region Player of the Year and was a first team All-South Region pick by all three organizations, as was Sands.  Blake Ketner (Davidson, NC/NW Cabarrus HS) was a first team All-South Region selection by the ABCA and was second team on the NCBWA and Daktronics teams.  Tim Holmes (Bay Village, OH/Bay HS) was named second team all-region by the NCBWA.  Thomas also claimed the ABCA/Rawlings South Region “Gold Glove” Award for the second straight year.

Thomas, a senior centerfielder, batted .435 this season and broke his own school record with 101 hits in 2008.  He scored 81 runs and stole 23 bases, while connecting on 22 home runs and collecting 64 RBI.  Thomas set school career marks for hits (344), runs (281), stolen bases (91) and triples (14).

The switch-hitter finished second all-time in doubles (67) and third in home runs (48), posting the seventh best slugging percentage (.654) in school history.  Thomas’ .469 on-base percentage ranks fifth best, while his .386 average ties for third best.  He finished third all-time in RBI (188) and was tops in fielding percentage (.996), making only two errors during his four seasons which covered a record 226 games.

Sands finished the season with a .390 average, setting a school record with 85 RBI and equaling the mark with 24 homers.  He shared team-high honors with 81 runs scored.  The junior outfielder had a .507 on-base percentage, drawing a record 56 walks, and had a .780 slugging percentage.

In three seasons, Sands set the school record with 61 home runs and stands second with 205 RBI and 201 runs scored.  He also has the highest slugging percentage (.752) in school history, is second in on-base percentage (.482) and seventh in batting average (.381).

Ketner started a record 17 games on the mound this season and posted an 8-3 record with a 3.34 ERA.  The junior logged 97 innings and allowed 111 hits with 56 strikeouts and 27 walks.  He completed three of his starts which included a pair of shutouts and had a streak of 20 consecutive scoreless innings during the season.

Holmes, a junior, made 23 appearances in 2008 with five starts.  He had a 5-1 record with a 3.83 ERA.  In his final start of the season, he tossed a complete game at the South Region Tournament to send the Indians into the championship game.  Over 54 innings, he allowed 56 hits with 19 walks and 48 strikeouts.
