Dunshie Sparks Women's Soccer to Opening Win
CHARLOTTE, NC -- Sophomore Andrea Dunshie (Apex, NC/SE Raleigh HS) had a goal and an assist to spark Catawba to an opening 2-1 win over host Queens in women’s soccer action on Friday night. The game was originally scheduled for Frock Field, but was moved due to unplayable field conditions in Salisbury.
Senior Lena Suarez (Charlotte, NC/Hopewell HS) put the Lady Indians on the board midway through the opening half, scoring off a corner kick from Dunshie in the 22nd minute. The teams went to the break with the same scoring and played the second half in rainy conditions.
Dunshie converted a penalty kick in the 57th minute to give Catawba a two-goal edge then Queens pulled a goal back with just over 15 minutes to play as when Kari Byzewski scored on a penalty kick for the Royals. Neither team had many opportunities with Queens holding an 8-6 edge in shots while Catawba lead in corner kicks 7-5.
"I am very proud of the team and staff because it's been a tough week training wise having to improvise with practices," said Catawba Coach John Cullen. "We did very well to come on the road and win a big game against a team that won their conference tournament last year and went to the NCAA's. It's a good start and we hope to build on that next week."
