Softball's slide reaches 17 in a rowSALISBURY, NC -- Coker College, ranked 15th in NCAA II, swept a softball doubleheader from host Catawba on Saturday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Cobras won by the scores of 2-0 and 9-0 to improve to 24-6 overall. Catawba losing streak reached 17 games as the Lady Indians fell to 10-22-1. The opener was scoreless until the fifth, when Coker struck for both its runs. Summer Joyner (Andrews, SC) hit a sacrifice fly and Carolann Raysor (Blackville, SC) delivered a two-out pinch hit single to drive home a run. Laura Hughes (Midlothian, VA) had two hits to lead Coker, while Kaylene Fountain (Spokane, WA) scattered six hits in recording the shutout. Liz Corbett (Severn, MD) had two hits, including a double for Catawba. Coker got a two-out RBI single from Hughes in the opening inning of the second game, then began to pull away in the middle innings. Sheritha McKenzie (Lake City, SC) hit a two-out, three-run homer in the fourth, while Fountain hit a solo shot in the fifth. The Cobras would score five runs in the fifth, two coming on a double by McKenzie. McKenzie was 3-for-4 with five RBI in the second game for Coker, while Fountain also enjoyed a 3- for-4 game. Sasha Gray (Chehalis, WA) allowed five hits in her shutout. Jess Gimbel (King George, VA)had two hits for the Lady Indians. #######
