Powers Named SAC Volleyball Player of the Week
ROCK HILL, SC -- Catawba College senior middle blocker Melissa Powers (Bennett, NC/N. Moore) has been named this week’s South Atlantic Conference volleyball Player of the Week. Lincoln Memorial University junior libero Alicia MacIntyre (Muncie, IN) is the first-ever SAC volleyball Specialist of the Week. The SAC volleyball Player of the Week awards are selected by a vote of the league’s nine sports information directors.
Powers helped Catawba split its four matches at the Catawba College Invitational and was named to the all-tournament team. In a five-game loss to Pfeiffer, the North Moore High School graduate notched a school-record 37 kills while hitting at a 41 percent clip. Powers led the team and reached double-figures in kills in all four matches, averaging nearly 5.3 per game. She added 12 blocks and six digs over the four matches.
MacIntyre has recovered from a pre-season ankle injury to play a key role for the Railsplitters. Her work ethic and determination helped her contribute to the LMU cause in this weekend’s Carson-Newman volleyball tournament.
She averaged 4.85 digs per game in four matches for the Railsplitters. The Hiram College transfer added five service aces for the week. MacIntyre had a season-high 22 digs against West Virginia State. She helped LMU compile a 3-1 record with victories over Lees-McRae, West Virginia Wesleyan and Mount Olive.
