Men's Soccer Grabs First Win With 3-0 Shutout Over Barton
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba netted three second-half goals, two by penalty kicks, and defeated visiting Barton 3-0 in men’s soccer action on Wednesday night at Frock Field. The win improves the Catawba Indians to 1-2, while the Bulldogs fall to 0-2.
It was Barton that looked to be in position to score first just over 10 minutes into the second half. Paxton Barnes (Wilson, NC) would be denied from the six on a diving save by Tyler Held (Virginia Beach, VA/Kellam) to preserve the scoreless game.
In the 64th minute, David Bloom (Marietta, GA/Lassiter) chested down a ball in the box which hit the hand of a Barton defender and the Indians were awarded a penalty kick. Bloom converted to give Catawba the lead.
Andrew Landry (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada/Donevan Institute) scored the first of his two goals five minutes later as he rifled a shot from the right side for an insurance goal. Another handball in the 78th minute provided Landry with his second goal of the night as he converted from the penalty spot.
Catawba held a 14-7 edge in shots with Held making three saves. Brian Riesenberg (Fort Thomas, KY) tallied five stops for the Bulldogs. The Indians also enjoyed a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.
