Baseball gets split with WingateSALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College and Wingate University split a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Newman Park. Catawba took the opener 8-5, while the Bulldogs earned the split with a 6-1 win in the nightcap. The Indians now stand at 17-12 overall and 4-3 in the SAC, while Wingate moves to 14-14-1 and 3-5. Wingate grabbed a 2-0 lead in the opener on a home run by Chris Torres (Charlotte, NC) in the opening inning. Bulldog starter Marc Church (Granite Falls, NC) sailed through the first three innings, allowing only two baserunners, but found trouble in the fourth. Catawba's Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC) homered to lead off the inning, then capped the eight-run frame with a two-out grand slam. Tribe starter Zach Snyder (Lexington, NC) settled down after the opening innings and allowed only one hit over the rest of his seven innings. He improved to 5-1, allowing two runs on four hits, with four walks and four strikeouts. Wingate did pull within 8-5 on John Spencer's (Charlotte, NC) three-run homer in the eight, but reliever Mark Smith (Brown's Summitt, NC) retired the next five batters to end the game. Chad Hill (Bennett, NC) had three hits to lead Catawba, while Spencer had his five RBI on the two home runs. Wingate got home runs from Sherman Greer (Stanfield, NC) and Torres over the first three innings of the second game to get off to a 4-1 edge and three pitchers combined to allow Catawba only two runs. A two-run fifth upped the Bulldog lead to 6-1. Greer and Andrew Romberger (Norristown, PA) each had two hits for the Bulldogs, while Andy McKinney (Matthews, NC) picked up the win in relief. Catawba failed to capitalize on its opportunities in the night cap, leaving 10 on base and having three runners thrown out on the bases, including a pair at the plate. The Indians collected just six hits, but drew eight walks. Brian Hatley (Salisbury, NC) took the loss on the mound, while freshman Spencer Anthony (Charlotte, NC) struck out five batters in his two innings of work. #######
