Cuthbertson Runs for 150 Yards As Football Defeats ECSU 41-29
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba overcame an early 13-0 deficit and defeated visiting Elizabeth City State 41-29 in football action on Saturday night at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field. The win leaves both squads with a 1-1 record. Catawba iced the see-saw battle when Marcus Davis (Charlotte, NC/N. Mecklenburg HS) returned a fumble 47 yards for a score with 4:40 to play.
Jamelle Cuthbertson (Charlotte, NC/Harding HS) ran for 150 yards and three touchdowns to spark the Catawba Indians comeback. ECSU struck first on the game’s third play from scrimmage as Curtis Rich (Fort Washington, MD) connected with Dexter Manley (Cheasapeake, VA) for a 67-yard score just 1:03 into the contest. The point-after was missed.
Catawba would fumble the snap on a punt attempt on its first possession and the Vikings took over at the Indian 17. It took two runs from Dennis Hamilton (High Point, NC), the last covering two yards, for a 13-0 edge with 11:12 remaining in the opening quarter.
Cuthbertson got the first Catawba score as the Indians marched 78 yards with was capped by the senior’s one-yard run to trim the deficit to 13-7. The Indians took the lead early in the second quarter as Howard Williamson (Greensboro, NC/Dudley HS) tossed a 14-yard strike to Brandon Bunn (Virginia Beach, VA/Fork Union) for a 14-13 edge.
Catawba would increase its lead to 21-13 on a 49-yard burst by Cuthbertson, but Reggie Smith (Fort Wayne, IN) answered the score with an 86-yard kickoff return. ECSU would get a 35-yard field goal from Daniel Mendez (Riverside, CA) with 30 seconds left in the half to take a 23-21 lead to the break.
After a short ECSU punt in the third quarter, Cuthbertson ran in from five yards out to cap an 18-yard drive with 7:28 to go in the third quarter to put Catawba ahead for good. Williamson threw a 23-yard scoring pass to Gerron Bryant (W. Palm Beach, FL/Boynton Beach HS) two minutes into the fourth quarter for a 34-23 lead.
ECSU pulled within 34-29 on a 34-yard run by Hamilton with 11:33 remaining, but the two-point try failed. The Vikings were just inside Catawba territory in the final five minutes when Davis sacked Rich then returned the fumble for a score and the 41-29 lead. Jasmon Carpenter (Black Mountain, NC/Owen HS) intercepted Rich on the next ECSU drive and Catawba ran out the clock.
Williams completed 16-of-31 passes on the day for 218 yards and two scores. Brian Terwilliger (Wilmington, NC/New Hanover HS) caught four passes for 29 yards, ran for 56 on five carries and completed a pass for 13 yards. Charles McAfee (Charlotte, NC/Vance HS) recorded 10 tackles, including five for losses, while Davis had a pair of sacks.
Hamilton led ECSU on the ground with 72 yards on 14 tries. Rich was 16-of-28 passing for 209 yards, while Manley finished with 149 yards on eight catches. Rod Jones (Sussex, VA) made a dozen tackles for the Vikings with a sack and a fumble recovery.
