Robbins' first career homer helps Baseball to 12-11 win

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College overcame an early six-run deficit and defeated visiting Wingate 12-11 in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Newman Park. Catawba scored the winning run with two outs in the ninth on an error. The Indians improve to 18-12 overall and 5-3 in the SAC, while Wingate falls to 14-15-1 and 3-6. Wingate stormed out to a 6-0 lead after a half inning. The Bulldogs opened the game with three consecutive singles, followed by a three-run homer by Andrew Romberger (Norristown, PA). After two strikeouts, the Bulldogs put together four more hits, getting run-scoring hits by Andrew Connor (Randleman, NC) and Stuart James (Wingate, NC). Catawba got back in the game with three of its own in the first. Three hits to open the inning produced a run on a single by Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC) and the Tribe added two more runs on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly. Wingate would add two runs in both the second and third innings. David Yount (Forest City, NC) hit a two-run homer with two outs in the second, while Toby Bicknell (Charlotte, NC) and Chris Torres (Charlotte, NC) had two-out, run-scoring doubles in the third. Catawba got a single run in the second on the first career home run by senior Mike Robbins (Columbia, SC), then crept back within three runs following Chad Hill's (Bennett, NC) two-run triple with two outs in the fourth. The Indians would tie the game at 10-10 on a three-run homer by Curt Motsinger (Kernersville, NC) in the sixth. The Bulldogs retook the lead in the seventh on a leadoff homer by Brandon Wright (Dallas, NC), but Catawba benefitted from a two-out error in its seventh to tie the game. Wingate loaded the bases in the eight with one out, but Matt Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) worked out of the jam, getting Yount to pop out and Wright on a fly out. Wingate again threatened in the ninth after a single by Brian Fulp (Winston-Salem, NC) and a walk by Connor, but James was robbed on a line shot to gap in rightfield by Motsinger and pinch-hitter Ken Pasour (Dallas, NC) grounded into a double play. Catawba got a one-out single by Blair Reynolds (King, NC) in the ninth and after Israel Morrow (Claremont, NC) reached on a fielder's choice, he advanced to second on a wild pitch. Southard chopped a grounder to third that Pasour threw high to first to allow Morrow to score the winning run. Morrow led the 19-hit Catawba attack, going 4-for-5. Reynolds, who set a new Catawba record with his 21st double of the season to lead off the first, had three hits along with Southard and Hill. James and Torres each had three hits for the Bulldogs. #######
