Dennis' Record-Tying Five TD Passes Highlights Football's Mayor's Cup Win

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba claimed the Mayor’s Cup for the ninth straight time with a 49-7 victory over host Livingstone in football action on Saturday night at Belk Stadium.  Sophomore quarterback Patrick Dennis (Durham, NC/Cedar Ridge HS) highlighted the night by equaling a school record with five touchdown passes as the Catawba Indians improve to 2-1.  The Blue Bears fall to 0-3.

Dennis connected with red-shirt freshman Eric Morman (Rockingham, NC/Richmond Sr. HS) on the first score as the due capped a 76-yard drive on a 44-yard scoring play.  That would be the lone score of the opening quarter, but early in the second Jasmon Carpenter (Black Mountain, NC/Owen HS) intercepted a pass and returned it 42 yards to give the Indians a 13-0 edge.

Catawba would take a 19-0 lead to the break after Dennis found Travis Landrum (Inman, SC/Chapman HS) for a 22-yard score with 5:44 left before the break.  Catawba got two quick scores to open the third quarter as the Blue Bears fumbled a snap on a punt in the end zone for a safety and Dennis added a 40-yard strike to Gerron Bryant (W. Palm Beach, FL/Boynton Beach HS) 30 seconds later for a 28-0 lead.

Dennis would add two more scoring passes before the quarter was over, tossing a 10-yard pass to Grayson Downs (Mt. Pleasant, NC/Mt Pleasant HS) and tying the record on a 51-yard connection with Brandon Bunn (Virginia Beach, VA/Fork Union).  Antonio Hall (Greensboro, NC/NE Guilford HS) closed out the Catawba scoring on a one-yard run with 5:14 to play.  Steven Williams threw a four-yard pass to Christopher Peoples for the lone Livingstone score with 3:34 left.

The Catawba defense held the Blue Bears to just three first downs and 163 total yards.  The Indians totaled 427 yards.  Jamelle Cuthbertson (Charlotte, NC/Harding HS) ran for 63 yards, while Hall followed with 57.  Freshman Princeton Brooks (Gastonia, NC/N. Gaston HS) added 45 yards.  Dennis went 12-of-21 for 242 yards and the record-tying five touchdowns.  Bunn had three catches for 55 yards.
