Baseball holds off Anderson

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College defeated visiting Anderson 10-8 in baseball action on Tuesday night at Newman Park. The game was delayed on hour and a half due to rain and eventually was called in the ninth due to another shower. Catawba improves to 19-12, while the Trojans fall to 13-15. The Indians opened the scoring in the first as Israel Morrow (Claremont, NC) doubled home Blair Reynolds (King, NC), who doubled to start the inning, and Curt Motsinger (Kernersville, NC) drove home Morrow with a single. Anderson came back in the second, getting RBI singles from Donavon Schmidt and Seth Thompson. Catawba would answer back as Mike Robbins (Columbia, SC) homered for the second straight day with one out. Morrow doubled home another run and Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC) cranked a two-run homer for a 6-2 lead. Anderson got a two-run homer from Ryan Gambrell in the third, but David Stroup (Pfafftown, PA) prevented further damage be striking out Caleb Owen with the bases loaded. Thomas Giles (Lynchburg, VA) would earn the win with a solid effort in relief. He allowed just three hits and two runs over three and a third innings to improve to 2-2. Catawba would break the game open in the fifth, scoring four runs. Matt Baker (Charlotte, NC) capped the inning with a two-run double. Anderson got two runs in both the seventh and innings to pull within 10-8. Schmidt had a two-run single in the seventh, while Jason Jones had a RBI single in the eighth. The Trojans put two runners on in the ninth with two outs, but the game was called when the field became flooded due to continuing showers over the late innings. Morrow paced the Tribe attack with three hits, while Reynolds, Motsinger and Robbins each had two hits. Schmidt, Jones and Gambrell all had three hits for the Trojans. #######
