Volleyball Opens SAC Play With Sweep Over Lenoir-Rhyne
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba opened league play with a three-set sweep of visiting Lenoir-Rhyne in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians improve to 6-4 overall and 1-0 in the SAC, winning by the scores of 25-16, 25-21 and 25-22. The Bears fall to 6-7 and 0-1.
Catawba got 13 kills and five blocks from senior middle Melissa Powers (Bennett, NC/N. Moore HS) to lead the way for the Lady Indians. Junior middle Jasmine Chunn (Yadkinville, NC/Forbush HS) added four more blocks as Catawba held Lenoir-Rhyne to just a .037 hitting percentage and posted 10 team blocks.
Freshman Lindsey Cantu (Orlando, FL) had nine kills to lead Lenoir-Rhyne. Brooke Christenbury (Mooresville, NC) added six kills, two blocks and an ace.
The Lady Indians jumped to a quick 7-3 lead in the opening set, but saw Lenoir-Rhyne rally to tie things at 8-all. Leading 15-12, Catawba used a pair of runs to pull away and grab the set one win.
The second set was a back-and-fourth battle that was tied at 15-all. After a L-R setting error, Powers served an ace to help Catawba move ahead 18-15. The Bears pulled within 22-20 after a kill by Katie Novacek (Raliegh, NC) and a combo block by Novacek and Christenbury. L-R would make three errors over the next four points to aid in the Catawba win.
Set three would be another tight affair. Catawba had moved ahead 18-16, but the Bears reeled off three straight points to grab the lead. Unfortunately, two of the points came on an out of order serve which wiped two points away and gave Catawba a penalty point, leaving the Lady Indians up 19-17.
Lenoir-Rhyne was able to rally back and went ahead 22-21 on a kill by Jordan Ledford (Newton, NC). Powers would get a kill then combine with Shay Meeks (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) for a block and a 23-22 edge for Catawba. Meeks followed with a kill and the match ended on a ball handling error from the Bears.
Mai Zoua Lo (Hickory, NC/Foard HS) picked up 14 digs for Catawba and Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, NC/Lafayette HS) added 13 digs and five kills. Freshman Megan Courson (Statesville, NC/W. Iredell HS) had 25 assists and three blocks. Elizabeth Flattery (Sparta, NC) recorded a dozen digs and 22 assists for the Bears, while Novacek had three blocks.
