Suarez Gets Early Goal as Women's Soccer Wins SAC Opener 1-0
SALISBURY, NC -- Freshman Lena Suarez (Charlotte, NC/Hopewell HS) scored six minutes into the match and Catawba made it hold up in defeated visiting Newberry 1-0 in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action on Saturday night at Frock Field. The win is the fifth straight for the Catawba Indians, who improve to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in the SAC. Newberry falls to 2-5 and 1-1.
Newberry nearly scored in the second minute, but Michaela Peach’s (Tadcaster, ENGLAND) shot was blocked off the line. Suarez would head home a cross from Tasha Wilhelm (Mt. Savage, MD/Beall HS) for the lone goal at the 6:00 mark.
Each team had six shots in the opening half and Newberry had just two in the final 45 minutes, but they were the two best scoring chances of the final half. Meagan Heany (Ajax,ONT,CANADA) had her shot in the 59th minute saved off the line by a defender and 30 seconds later Allie Johns (Lexington, SC) had her blast saved by Catawba keeper Lindsay Webster (Hopkington, MA/Hopkington HS).
Neither team threatened much in the final 30 minutes with the best remaining chance coming from Catawba in the final minute. Webster finished with the one lone save in posting her first shutout. Emily Rhoades (Buckley, WA) had four stops for Newberry.
“I though it was a solid game for us tonight,” said Catawba Coach John Cullen. “I thought we were on our heels a little in the first half, but were much more competitive in the second half. It was just a hard-fought game between two teams going for a conference wins. It also gave our freshmen valuable experience in a league match.”
